The recent changes announced for The Elder Scrolls Online signify a shift in its content delivery approach. While the game has seen a successful run with substantial expansions akin to World of Warcraft, the direction is now evolving. ZeniMax Online Studios has indicated that the future will be characterized by a new seasonal model rather than the traditional major expansions.
Historically, The Elder Scrolls Online has enjoyed success with its annual expansions, starting with Morrowind in 2017 and continuing up to Gold Road, which was released just six months ago. Zone design coupled with quest-related content has always been pivotal in shaping the experience of every Elder Scrolls title. However, as we look to the future, particularly into 2025, the focus will shift towards diversifying the array of content available to cater to all players of ESO. As a result, the previous expansion format will be replaced by this new content strategy.
Moving forward, players can anticipate a continuous influx of fresh content, albeit through seasons that will roll out updates with greater frequency. These seasons may lack some of the grandiosity associated with earlier expansions but will still introduce fresh gameplay experiences.
Throughout 2025, the game will transition to a seasonal model, replacing the yearly major content updates previously identified as Chapters. Details regarding this approach will be shared in due course. Players should prepare for named seasons lasting three to six months, offering a blend of themed narrative content, unique events, store offerings, dungeons, and more.
